10 Tips for Safe Online Gambling — No Lectures, Just Sense

20 March 2026 · 5 min read

A lot of "safe gambling" articles read like your parents telling you off. This one won't. These are practical tips for adults who play online and want to stay in control.

Let's go.

1. Set a budget before you open the casino

Not after. Before. Sit down, look at your finances and decide how much you can afford to lose this month. Yes, lose. Because that's the realistic scenario. That amount is your entertainment budget. Once it's gone — done. Same as if you'd bought cinema tickets.

2. Never gamble with borrowed money

This is a rule without exceptions. Credit cards, loans from mates, your overdraft. Simply — no. If you don't have spare cash for a flutter, don't play. There's no shame in that. The shame is in debt from gambling.

3. Set an alarm

Seriously. An alarm on your phone. "Playing for 1 hour" — alarm goes off — you stop. Time at the slots passes unbelievably fast and casinos are designed to make you lose track. Colours, sounds, animations — it's all there to keep you playing. An alarm is your reset button.

4. Don't play when you're drunk, upset or angry

Your emotional state affects your decisions. A lot. Bad day at work? Row with your partner? Third pint in? Not the time for a casino. Impulsive decisions and gambling don't mix. In fact, impulsive decisions and money generally don't mix.

5. Learn the rules of the game

Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people play blackjack without knowing basic strategy. Or spin slots with an RTP of 91% when there are identical ones at 96%+. Five minutes of reading can make a real difference to your long-term results.

6. Use bonuses, but read the terms

"100% up to €500" sounds great. But if the wagering is 50x, you need to play through €25,000 before you can withdraw a cent. That's not a bonus — it's a mathematical illusion. Look at wagering, max bet rules and game restrictions. Tedious? Yes. Important? Absolutely.

7. Don't chase losses

We've said it already, but we'll say it again because it's that important. Lost €100? The worst thing you can do is deposit another €100 to "get it back". The statistics are clear — chasing losses almost always leads to even bigger losses. Accept the loss, log out, come back another day.

8. Only play at licensed casinos

MGA, UKGC, Curacao — these are licences that actually mean something. Unlicensed casinos have no obligation to follow the rules, can refuse to pay out and you've nobody to complain to. It's not worth the risk. Ever.

9. Keep records

Write down your deposits and withdrawals. Even in Notes on your phone. When you see the numbers in black and white, it's far easier to stay realistic. "Ah sure, I haven't spent that much" stops being an excuse when you've got the data in front of you.

10. Know when to stop

The hardest tip. And the most important. If playing is no longer fun — stop. If you think about gambling when you're not playing — stop. If you're hiding how much you play — stop. No slot in the world is worth your health, your relationships or your financial stability.

That's it. No drama, no moralising. Just common sense.
